Fine Wine & Good Spirits Wine Specialist: Petra Meckley

Petra Meckley has worked for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) for almost 26 years. She started part-time and worked her way up to a management position before interviewing for her current job: Wine Specialist.

“Over the years, the training has been spectacular, with wine educators from various countries speaking about their skills,” she says. “I am truly blessed to have been trained on the job and to have met wonderful customers (who have become friends), my fellow wine specialists, and everyone else along the way.”

With the holidays coming up, customers will be thinking about holiday dishes. What would you suggest as an unexpected Pennsylvania wine pairing for Thanksgiving?

Nissley Fantasy, a sweet rosé, goes very well with turkey and all the fixings.

In the spirit of keeping things local, do you have favorite local meats, cheeses, or other foods that you enjoy pairing with specific PA wines?

Pennsylvania venison and cheese from Caputo Brothers Creamery in Spring Grove are a great pairing with Chambourcin.

What PA wines would you recommend as a gift and why?

Allegro Fusion is a wonderfully sweet wine to give as a gift. It is at a great price point and easy drinking.

What is your advice for someone new to exploring local wines?

I gather information about my customers to see what they like in food and other drinks. Then I can refer them to the types of wines that they should be trying. Another great option is to attend a local wine festival, or grab a friend and hit a Pennsylvania wine trail.
