Market Day: Seek out Pennsylvania wines at your local farmers market

If you’re a regular reader of The PA Wine Land Post, you know that if you’re in Pennsylvania, you’re never more than an hour from a winery. But what if that’s not close enough? What if you want an opportunity to chat with a wine specialists, sample some different varieties, and pick up a couple of bottles as part of your regular routine?

Fortunately, more and more farmers markets are adding wineries to their vendor rolls. Shopping at a farmers market is a totally different experience than visiting your neighborhood grocery store. You can watch the seasons change as you shop, spotting the first bunch of asparagus in spring and cheering the fall arrival of squash and sweet potatoes. But more importantly, you have direct access to the producer, whether you want to ask them which heirloom tomato variety to use on a BLT, how to cook an unfamiliar type of mushroom, or what kind of dish to serve alongside the Chardonnay you just fell in love with.

And once you get the answer to that last one, Pennsylvania’s bounty is at your fingertips: pastured eggs, goat cheese and mint for a simple frittata, grass-fed steaks and fingerling potatoes for an over-the-top date night, or just-picked corn and locally-smoked bacon for the world’s best summer chowder.
