Statement from the Pennsylvania Winery Association on the passing of Doug Moorhead

Doug Moorhead, “Father of Pennsylvania Wine” passed on June 10, 2021 at 87 years old. This is a sadness shared by his family, friends, and his colleagues in the Pennsylvania wine industry. In the late 1950s, Doug planted Riesling and other Vitis vinifera grapes in the Lake Erie area. His winery, Presque Isle Wine Cellars opened in 1964.

Doug was a founding member and past President of the Pennsylvania Winery Association and served as a director of Wine America and The Pennsylvania Grape Marketing Board (today known as the Pennsylvania Wine Marketing & Research Board) as well as serving as a long-time national director for The National Grape Cooperative. Doug was also one of only two recipients of The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Eastern Winery Exposition.

His influence and contributions during his long and impactful career in the wine industry will truly never be forgotten and will continue to inspire us for years to come. We wish our most sincere condolences to Doug’s family, friends, and colleagues.
