The 2022 PA Sommelier Judgment was held on Monday, September 19th at Bloom Southern Kitchen in Chester Springs, PA.

The PA Sommelier Judgment is a wine tasting event and competition that was established in 2017 by the Pennsylvania Winery Association (PWA) in partnership with Scott Zoccolillo, currently the Wine Director of Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, as an opportunity to connect sommeliers and restaurant wine buyers with Pennsylvania wines. In collaboration with Scott, the PWA established this can’t-miss tasting
opportunity as an educational event for the wine experts and, ultimately, as a business-driving promotional event for PA wineries.

The PA Sommelier Judgment is one of the only opportunities for Pennsylvania wineries to put forward their vinifera, hybrids and sparkling wines for regional sommeliers and wine buyers to taste, provide feedback, and consider for their represented programs.

At the PA Sommelier Judgment, wines are tasted blind over two rounds and judged on criteria like varietal correctness with a strong emphasis on final impression of the wine and balance. The first round of blind tasting and scoring narrows down the submissions to the panel’s top 20 wines and those wines are tasted for a second time in round two when judging is based on a 1-10 scale. The scores are tallied to honor Best in Show, Best Red, Best White, Best Hybrid and Best Sparkling wines.

Wines are submitted from across the state and must be labeled 100% Pennsylvania grown and produced and/or labeled with a Pennsylvania AVA region according to TTB standards.

The PWA would like to thank all participating wineries, judges, and the gracious hosts at Bloom Southern Kitchen.
